Paignton Sports College host a Primary School Gymnastics Festival

On Friday 26th March 2004, 32 year 5 pupils took part in a gymnastics festival held at Paignton Community & Sports College. The festival organised by Paula Thomas (School Sport Co-ordinator) consisted of the following programme of events:

  • A fifteen-minute gymnastics display performed by pupils Nadia Hitchen, year 8; Zoe Sherfield, year 8; Amy Sherfield, year 10 and Leah Hutchings, year 12. All four are currently studying at Paignton Community and Sports College and attend gymnastic clubs within Torbay. This demonstrated to the primary school pupils how to perform and execute gymnastics skills with correct technique, precision and control. The skills were performed on the floor, vault and with the use of a trampette (a mini trampoline).
  • The four secondary school students then assisted with coaching the 32 pupils from four primary schools: Collaton St Mary; Curledge Street; Foxhole and Oldway. The youngsters were set the task of creating a group sequence using movements and skills from the British Gymnastics charts, badges 2-7.
  • When all of the group sequences were completed and finalised, the pupils had the opportunity to perform their sequence to the other participating schools. The sequences were judged / marked out of ten by two judges kindly provided by South Devon Gymnastics Club.
  • The winners were then announced and awards presented by Andy Hele, Director of Sport at Paignton Community and Sports College.

The pupils worked extremely hard during the festival and performed commendably. The standard was a lot higher than expected and the overall results were as follows: 4th place = Collaton St Mary; 3rd place = Foxhole; 2nd place = Oldway; 1st place = Curledge Street.

Thank you to the staff that organised and attended the festival with the pupils, South Devon Gymnastics Club for providing judges and to Frosts Trophies for supplying the medals and trophy.

Primary Netball Festival at Paignton Community College

On Thursday 11th December 70 pupils from five primary schools were invited to take part in a Netball festival, in the new sports hall, situated on the Borough Road site. The year 4 pupils received skills coaching from six year 12 students, Rebecca Kenshole, Leah Hutchings, Sophie Irving, Michelle Carey-Torrance, Lisa Southwell-Walsh and Tajae Grey who attend the college.

The skills were well structured and gave the pupils an insight into the wider game of Netball. This lasted for one hour and was followed by the festival. Although the emphasis was on winning the competition, which gave the afternoon a real exhilarating atmosphere for staff as well as pupils, the participating and enjoyment was certainly not forgotten.

The festival was extremely electrifying and with each game played at a high tempo. The skills that had been passed on to the pupils shone through during the festival and all schools competed to the best of their ability.

Congratulations go to Oldway Primary who were the eventual winners of the festival and a big thank you to Foxhole Junior School, Curledge Street Primary, Preston Primary and Collaton St Mary C of E Primary for taking part in this fantastic event and to all the teachers who escorted their pupils to the school.
